Medicinal evodia fruit in the traditional Chinese medicine planting base has sprouted as the weather warms up in Shuangyue Village, Jiahe County. The mountain forest, which covers an area of about 2,000 mu (around 133.33 hectares), is surrounded by a 2.8-kilometer winding mountain road and scattered with medicinal evodia fruit.
Shuangyue Village, located in a remote area, has a hilly and undulating landscape. In the past, most villagers chose to work in nearby coal mining enterprises.
In recent years, however, “black” industries have been gradually eliminated and villagers have had less access to income increase according to the environmental protection requirements.
In the face of the dilemma of insufficient stamina in the village collective economy, Lei Hualin, Secretary of the Party branch, gathered a group of people from the village general Party branch and decided to preliminarily outline the development blueprint of building a modern and clustered industrial system integrating traditional Chinese medicine and health, rural revitalization, and tourism from the geographical advantages by holding meetings among the Party members and villager representatives.
In May, 2018, Lei Hualin contacted Lei Zaoshi, the former leader of a coal mining enterprise who was suffering the “pain” of industrial transformation and upgrade, and told him the idea of planting traditional Chinese medicine. The two men went to the field and investigated the cases of collective development in excellent villages.
They found that medicinal evodia fruit is suitable to grow in the mountain, roadside or sparse forest in warm regions. The growth attribute is consistent with the characteristics of mountain forest in Shuangyue Village.
If medicinal evodia fruit could be planted in Shuangyue Village, it would exert the advantages of collective land, drive the development of the whole village by taking traditional Chinese medicine planting as its pillar industry, and create a new pattern of modern industrial development in traditional Chinese medicine and health, rural revitalization and tourism.
As Lei Hualin came back to the village, he fought for the support from the Organization Department of County Party Committee and Town Party Committee in project development, land transfer and funds. He also cooperated with two professional planting cooperatives (Runze and Xintaiyuan) for the professional planting technology to integrate resources and share the sales channels.
On September 5, 2018, Hunan Zhenfeng Agricultural Technology Development Co., Ltd. was established, and the project of “Zhenfeng Agricultural Industrial Park” was approved on November 19, 2018.
With a total investment of 81.47 million yuan, the project mainly focused on the planting and sales of traditional Chinese medicine, seedlings, fruit and oil-tea camellia wood, covering a land area of more than 2,000 mu (around 133.33 hectares) and a planting area of 1,328 mu ( about 88.53 hectares).
Up to now, more than 600 mu (40 hectares) of medicinal evodia fruit has been planted.
The enterprise also extended its industrial chain and registered the trademark of medicinal evodia fruit pillow. It provides products to Lianqiao traditional Chinese medicine market in Shaoyang City and keeps expanding the sales channel with the support of Town Party Committee. At present, it is negotiating with two Chinese medicine enterprises.
In the next step, a product exhibition hall will be set up in Xiaojietian Village. Together with the red tourist resource “Xiao Ke’s former residence”, it will attract more attention to Xiaojietian Village.
The collective income of the whole village will increase through the land transfer for planting traditional Chinese medicine.
Next, Shuangyue Village will build an industrial revitalization demonstration zone along Jiangjun Road to boost the village collective economy.
